Serbia's National Flag: A Symbol of History and Tradition

Origins and Design

Serbia's national flag consists of three equal horizontal stripes: red, blue, and white. The red symbolizes the blood of Serbian patriots, while the blue represents the country's rivers and lakes. The white stripe symbolizes peace and unity.

Pan-Slavic Colors

The red, blue, and white stripes of the Serbian flag are also the colors of the Pan-Slavic movement, which aimed to unite Slavic nations. The flag was first used by Serbian rebels during the 1804 uprising against Ottoman rule.

Official Adoption

The National Flag of Serbia was officially adopted on November 11, 2010. It is used as the official flag of the Republic of Serbia, as well as by Serbian embassies and consulates around the world.

Coat of Arms

In addition to the tricolor stripes, the Serbian flag also features the Serbian coat of arms near the hoist. The coat of arms consists of a red double-headed eagle with a white cross and four smaller crosses on its wings. The eagle symbolizes the country's strength and sovereignty.
